This resource booklet provides special educators with structured methods, including Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA), to identify triggers and reinforcements linked to problem behaviours in students with disabilities. By equipping educators with strategies to replace maladaptive behaviours with constructive skill behaviours, the booklet aims to foster a more supportive and effective learning environment.

Behaviour modification is a key aspect of education for individuals with disabilities, helping manage communication challenges and fostering positive behaviours. Special educators play a crucial role in creating supportive learning environments that enhance engagement and social interaction.

Understanding Behaviour: Behaviour includes any observable action influenced by internal or external stimuli. Problem behaviours interfere with learning and require targeted interventions based on frequency, intensity, and context. Many arise from communication difficulties, making skill development essential.

Assessing Target Behaviours: Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA) identifies the triggers, contexts, and reinforcements maintaining problem behaviours. Effective interventions address behavioural deficits (e.g., lack of social skills) and excesses (e.g., frequent disruptions) through clear, measurable goals.

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS): PBS focuses on proactive strategies to encourage desirable behaviours while reducing challenges. Key approaches include:

  • Modifying Antecedents:

Adjusting the environment to prevent triggers.

  • Teaching Alternative Skills:

Providing functional replacements for problem behaviours.

  • Reinforcement Strategies:

Using positive reinforcement, shaping, and chaining to strengthen appropriate behaviours.

  • Extinction & Response Cost:

Reducing problem behaviours by removing reinforcements or implementing structured consequences.

  • Prompts & Fading:

Assisting learning with gradual withdrawal of support.
