In many cases, parents and teachers often face challenges when including children with deafblindness in mainstream schools. They may not know how to support these students in the classroom. This resource will help them understand what to do to help children with deafblindness to adapt and learn better.

  • Provide orientation to the students with deafblindness about classroom and other places like library, toilet etc so that they can know the location.
  • Organize all the materials of the classroom in a specific space. Introduce each furniture and space to them so that they can find everything easily.
  • Ensure there is enough lighting in the classroom and limit background noise.
  • Make sure the students with deafblindness sit in the front seat/row. It will be easy for the teacher to interact with them. Teacher will speak with a bit of a high tone and write on the blackboard in large text.
  • Use teaching learning materials and model objects where possible.
  • Know the student’s preferred mode of communication (sign language, verbal and tactile language) and communicate with them in that way.
  • Orient other students how they can support their classmates with deafblindness.
  • Organize regular meetings with their parents about the progress of their child.
