Parents, Caregivers, Policy Makers, and OPDs
Donnex Okwiri, a Learner Support Assistant in Kenya, supports children with deafblindness and complex disabilities both at home and in school. Before using the Global Deafblindness Resource Hub, he relied mainly on past training, handwritten notes and advice from colleagues when facing new challenges.
The Hub introduced him to practical, easy-to-follow guides he could apply in everyday situations. Using a resource on movement, Donnex worked with one learner who struggled to move independently at home, guiding them through structured functional mobility exercises that support safe and independent movement. Through consistent practice and repetition, the learner gradually gained confidence and can now move safely between rooms and use their body more independently in daily activities. For Donnex, the Hub has strengthened his practice and connected him to a wider community of support.

00:00:03:24 – 00:00:05:22
My name is Donnex Okwiri
00:00:06:05 – 00:00:08:20
I’m a learner support assistant from Kenya
00:00:08:20 – 00:00:12:02
I support learners with deafblindness
00:00:12:02 – 00:00:14:11
and multi-sensory impairments
00:00:14:15 – 00:00:17:03
both at home and those
00:00:17:03 – 00:00:19:11
that have transitioned to school
00:00:27:19 – 00:00:29:15
Before the Hub,
00:00:29:15 – 00:00:32:22
I could only rely on my own experiences
00:00:32:22 – 00:00:34:15
and when I got stuck
00:00:34:15 – 00:00:37:22
I could ask my colleagues to support me
00:00:41:03 – 00:00:44:14
but being that I’ve gone through the Hub now,
00:00:44:14 – 00:00:46:20
I am able to deliver
00:00:46:20 – 00:00:49:03
and give the correct information
00:00:50:23 – 00:00:54:07
Sense International Kenya introduced me to the Hub
00:00:54:20 – 00:00:57:07
and when I first logged on to the Hub,
00:00:57:07 – 00:01:02:00
I found amazing resources
00:01:02:00 – 00:01:04:11
everything is now clear
00:01:04:11 – 00:01:08:08
and it feels like having an expert in my pocket
00:01:09:01 – 00:01:12:04
One of my learners had difficulty in movement
00:01:12:17 – 00:01:15:24
I found a resource on the Hub that has helped me
00:01:16:15 – 00:01:20:02
in teaching the movement
00:01:20:02 – 00:01:23:19
Now, my learner is able to move from the bed
00:01:23:19 – 00:01:26:20
independently to the sitting room
00:01:26:20 – 00:01:30:17
instead of using my own knowledge
00:01:30:17 – 00:01:34:14
I now use the Hub as a reference tool
00:01:34:14 – 00:01:36:03
for communication
00:01:36:03 – 00:01:38:23
movement and playing resources
00:01:41:01 – 00:01:44:01
I show the parents the resources on the Hub
00:01:44:01 – 00:01:45:21
so that they can gain confidence
00:01:45:21 – 00:01:47:04
to support their children
00:01:51:20 – 00:01:54:16
The Hub connects me with the rest of the world
00:01:54:16 – 00:01:58:08
I can see what other countries are doing
00:01:58:08 – 00:02:01:15
it reminds me of not being alone
00:02:01:15 – 00:02:03:11
but part of a global team
00:02:07:20 – 00:02:10:18
I will continue using the Hub to guide parents
00:02:10:18 – 00:02:13:10
other LSAs and schools
00:02:13:10 – 00:02:16:19
and I hope to see more practical resources
00:02:16:19 – 00:02:17:17
in the future.
