The Foundation Level Sensory Motor Activities Handbook supports teachers who work with learners with complex disabilities. It is aligned to Kenya’s CBE Stage-Based Pathway at Foundation Level. The handbook explains the Foundation Level and guides teachers on how to help learners develop early and basic skills through simple sensory and motor activities. These activities help learners improve communication, body awareness, balance, coordination, attention, independence and exploration of the environment.

Learning is flexible and learner-centred, not age-based. The handbook also explains the curriculum structure which enables the teachers to understand learning outcomes, strands, sub-strands, core competencies, values and simple assessment methods. It highlights key learning areas such as sensory integration, body movement & control and creative activities that include art, music, dance and simple hands-on tasks.

The handbook provides many practical activities for touch, hearing, vision, movement, manipulation and eye–hand coordination. It offers sample lesson plans, IEP templates, progress records, assessment tools and examples of tasks that teachers can use in class. It also describes teaching methods that work well with learners with complex needs, such as demonstration, hand-under-hand exploration, storytelling, play-based learning, nature walks, group activities, routines and creative expression. Teachers are encouraged to adapt activities to each learner’s pace and abilities, so learning remains meaningful.

The handbook also promotes teamwork with parents, therapists, teacher-aides and the wider community. This partnership helps create safe, supportive and inclusive learning spaces where every learner can participate, practice skills and grow with confidence. The handbook is built on the belief that every learner can learn and grow when given the right support and environment.
